Additional Information

IFC Center has agreed to a $200,000 class action settlement to resolve allegations that it failed to properly disclose service fees for tickets sold on its website. The lawsuit claims this lack of transparency violated New York’s business laws, which require clear disclosure of additional fees before purchase.

The plaintiffs argue that when moviegoers bought tickets online through IFC Center’s site, they were not told about added service charges until after they had already started the checkout process. This, they say, was misleading and caused many people to pay fees they might have otherwise avoided.

The IFC Center is a well-known independent cinema in New York City that features documentaries, foreign films, and indie releases. While the theater denies breaking any laws, it agreed to the settlement to put the matter to rest.

Under the Terms of the Settlement

Eligible class members will receive a proportional refund based on the total amount they paid in service fees during the class period. Payment amounts will vary depending on how many valid claims are filed. The more a person paid in service fees, the larger their share of the settlement.

This case highlights increasing legal scrutiny over hidden or late-disclosed fees in online transactions—especially when consumers are left without a clear chance to opt out.
